It has been a busy month for Pumps UK Ltd. We were contacted by one of our clients as they needed to replace 2 sets of cold water booster pumps. Both sets had gone beyond repair and a life cycle upgrade was in desperate need.

  • 10/31/2018 - 16:12

We were contacted by one of our customers as their current cold-water booster set had a failed motor and inverter. The problem was the controls on the set were obsolete and the replacements will not communicate with the other controllers. We came to the conclusion that even though the controllers had obsolete programming the motors had a standard frame and shaft size, therefore replacing all three motors and retro fitting Hydrovar inverters would be the most cost effective solution to getting the set back up to full strength.

We were recently asked to replace a chilled water pressurisation unit in an office block in central London. The old pressurisation unit that was installed had failed and the parts were obsolete.

The pumps in the existing unit produced a static head pressure of 10 bar as this is what was required for the chillers to run. Due to the high-pressure requirement, we decided to build a bespoke PUK Autopress HPO unit to suit.

Recent upgrade in Kingston of an old belt driven pump for a new direct driven Lowara NSCS. We used crimped fittings on the new pipework to speed the install and get the system running.

Pumps UK were approached by Barclays bank to investigate their main chilled water pumps that were making irregular mechanical sounds.

    Armstrong Bearing Change

  • 12/20/2016 - 15:45

Pumps UK were called out by our customer as they had a pump installed on their site that had failed. The pump itself was an old circulator which had next to no details on it that we could work with.

Our engineers carried out various electrical and mechanical tests on site and discovered that the pump had seized up due to bearing failure which ultimately caused the windings to burn out. Due the pumps age we decide the best solution would be to remove it for a complete rewind and overhaul.

After much hard work (especially from our Service Supervisor Paul ) we have received the prestigious CHAS accreditation.

    Well done to the team!

Pumps UK were contacted by CITI bank in Canary Wharf to advise on an upgrade on their cold water booster set. The current insulation had 4 x directly driven long coupled pumps, each pump had 90 KW motors on them. The pumps had been designed to run as Duty Assist but because the 40 bar draw down vessel had been removed 2 pumps were starting at once and running on without any demand.

Pumps UK were recently approached by a customer for a faulty booster set in a premier block in London's Park Lane. Prior to the customer contacting us, they had instructed an emergency contractor to get them out of trouble and it eventually turned out to be an expensive and unsuccessful modification.

Pumps UK was contacted by one of our customers to carry out a service on one of their pressurisation units. Whilst servicing the unit, we discovered that their four 500 litre vessels had failed and need to be replaced. We decided to replace them with four new 500 litre Lowara vessels.

Pumps UK were contacted by a customer as they required an upgrade of their Constant Temperature and their Variable Temperature pumps before the winter time. On the initial site visit we notice that the local isolation valves on the pumps were seized and of the variable temperature pumps, one was leaking and the other was extremely noisy. Overall, all four pumps were dated and are now obsolete, so we decided it would be best to replace them with modern equivalents.

Pumps UK Service were called by a client with a site in London where it had problems with water pressure. We found the site was using an old CCD water boosting set with outdated pumps. We soon discovered that the water pressure was fluctuating due to the controls and accumulators failing, consequently causing the set to run continuously. On top of this, both sets of seals on the pumps were to leaking.

After much hard work from all members of staff, we have finally achieved the SSIP Constructionline Certificate of Health & Safety accreditation.

  • 09/09/2016 - 15:44

Pumps UK Service were approached by a client with a site they had in South West London. Previously, the site was a row of residential properties, but had been completely demolished to make way for a new multi-storey commercial and residential block. Pumps UK were brought in during the first fix stage of development. The client sent over the designs of the new property and from these designs we went on to size a booster set to suit the estimated demand.

The Pumps UK service division were approached by one of our customers as their existing Crane  AHU pumps and chilled water pumps were failing, becoming unreliable and inefficient. On our initial site visit, we noticed that the flanges had asbestos gaskets. We had our team of trained engineers attend and remove all of the gaskets before we started with any new work.

We recently attended a site in Trevor Square, London to overhaul a Wilo DPN twin circulator. Once we had dismantled it we found that the internals of the pump had worn out beyond repair. We could not perform a direct replacement as the Wilo DPN twin circulator is now obsolete so we had to select a suitable replacement. We selected a new Grundfos twin head circulator as it would fit straight between the existing flanges with out any trouble.

Pumps UK was contacted by a client to replace an old set of belt driven Pullen pumps in their office block in Aldgate, London.

We decided that a suitable replacement for the old Pullen pumps would be a set of direct drive circulators from Grundfos. After we had taken out the old pumps we had to build a bespoke frame simply because the pumps were located on the roof top plant room and meant that we needed to transport the pumps up the stairs. Our in house engineer fabricated a frame which had a runner and installed it on the plant room’s stairs.

Pumps UK were called to a block of residential flats in Woolwich which had Grundfos inverter driven booster pumps. Two of the three pumps had failed electronically where both inverters had blown out. On top of that, the seals were leaking and the bearings had failed. So this left the entire block of flats running on just a single booster pump.

This is the old Grundfos booster set:

Pumps UK Service were approached by Citi Bank to carry out the upgrade of their large chilled and condensed water systems at their offices in Canary Wharf, London. Our technical consultant surveyed the system and selected modern Armstrong equivalents to replace the old Armstrong versions. The upgrade consisted of eight pumps in total, four on the chilled system and four on the condensed. They also required pipework modifications which were carried out by our in house engineer.

Pumps UK Service carried out a replacement of two single head belt driven Turney Turbine pumps on Grosvenor Casino's heating system. We replaced the old belt driven pumps with Wilo inline modern equivalents. We also used our express crimping tool to replace all of the existing pipework to suit the new Wilo pumps. There were asbestos gaskets on this system but due to our highly trained and qualified engineers we were able to remove it safely to complete the job with the minimum of disruption to site. Below shows before and after shots of the install.
