Mahindra Formula E Racing Project

We were contacted by one of our HVAC clients as they had recently required assistance with heating and chilled water pumps on their Mahindra Racing site.

Following a full site survey from our service team, we confirmed that both systems pumps were beyond repair. We noticed on the chilled water system that the cold fill had been incorrectly plumbed into the wrong side of the system, this created a fundamental issue with how the existing pumps operated and could have been the reason behind the failures.

Our survey report recommended that both twin pumps were replaced for new and that at the same time we would carry out the necessary pipework modifications to correct the cold fill position on the system, so it was on the correct neutral side.

We selected Kolmeks pumps for both systems as they offered a perfect match in regards to both performance and installation. Kolmeks pumps are built with high-quality materials and with their face to face measurements are compact with a smaller casting than other options. This allowed us to carry out the necessary modifications without having to completely re-design the existing plant room.

The work was planned to only take 2 days. With help from our client making sure the system had been drained, we managed to remove both sets of pumps in the same day and prepped all pipework ready to carry out the installation the following day.

We positioned the new pumps on the existing bases, the heating pumps were slightly more straight forward with the installation. The pumps we selected fitted perfectly into position thanks to a custom fabricated spacer we built prior to the installation and it bolted straight up to a new pair of bellows on the inlet and outlets.

The chilled system required a little more modification due to the incorrect positioning of the cold fill pipe. We fabricated a reducing stool piece which allowed for a new cold fill stabbing, pressure gauges and temperature sensors. We then installed the new section of bespoke pipework onto the inlet side of the pump with butterfly valves.

We mounted the new Kolmeks pump onto the base, and that’s to the detailed site survey it all fitted perfectly in position without any issue, once again highlighting the need for detailed planning to reduce downtime.

Finally, we recommissioned the pressurisation unit and fully vented system and the job was completed.
